Councilmember Gernandt is a three-term elected councilmember in District #4 serving South Omaha residents since 2001. Garry has served as past President of the City Council in 2009 and is currently serving as City Council Vice President -- for the second time. Garry Gernandt has lived his whole life in South Omaha; attending and graduating from Omaha South High School and he has a Bachelor of Science degree from the University of Nebraska-Omaha. Councilmember Gernandt has spent the last four decades in public service prior to being elected to the Omaha City Council, first as a member of the U.S. Marine Corps, and then as an Omaha Police officer. He retired as an Omaha Police Sergeant in 2000, after 31 years of service. This experience has strengthened Garry’s strong work ethic and his belief that the best solutions are found by bringing everyone to the table and working together. Of particular note, Garry Gernandt has served on the Deer Park Neighborhood Association since 1981 and is currently the Treasurer, has served and continues to serve South Omaha through the South Omaha Neighborhood Alliance, the South Omaha Business Association, the South Omaha Environmental Task Force and the South Omaha Chamber of Commerce Redevelopment Committee. He even assists with the Deer Park Citizens Patrol and served on the Save Rosenblatt Committee this past year.
