Enforcement Authority Ordinance No. 28920 entitled the “Civil Rights: Anti-Discrimination” Ordinance to receive, initiate, investigate, settle, and dismiss charges of unlawful discrimination. Responsibilities The Civil Rights Division is responsible for the enforcement of the Civil Rights: Anti-Discrimination Ordinance through the investigation of complaints of discrimination in the areas of employment, housing, and public accommodation. The staff completes intakes and investigations not only for the City of Omaha but, via federal contracts, for the United States Equal Employment Opportunity Commission and the United States Department of Housing and Urban Development. To perform this task, the division employees must have complete and current knowledge of federal employment (Title VII of the Civil Rights Act of 1968, as amended, the Age Discrimination in Employment Act, the Americans with Disabilities Act, the Equal Pay Act, etc.) and housing (Title VIII of the Fair Housing Amendments Act of 1988) laws, as well as with state and local laws and ordinances related to civil rights.
