Event Changes Due to High Water Levels

June 3, 2011

June 2, 2011 — Hummel Park Day Camp and other activities at this park have been canceled for the 2011 Summer Season. This is due to excessive rain as well as the high river levels expected to last through the summer. This is the first time the park has been forced to cancel its Day Camp that has been in existence for over 60 years. “Our most important purpose is to ensure the safety of campers and staff,” said Melinda Pearson. “We feel this step is necessary based on the current and projected flooding conditions in the area. Full refunds of fees will be processed and mailed within the next few weeks. Next summer the day camp program will resume in new facilities at Hummel Park.”

Private donors have come to the rescue for Omaha kids by funding expansions to the Rec’s Kids Clubhouse Program with an additional site. The new Rec’s Kids Clubhouse site will be at the Walnut Grove Pavilion on 15050 Q Street. There is still plenty of time to sign up for this summer youth program for children ages 6-15, with Rec’s Kids Clubhouse. This program is designed to facilitate recreation opportunities for Omaha’s youth. The summer and after-school program encourages active, healthy, lifestyles while promoting social, emotional, and cognitive growth through play. Call 444-4FUN to request additional information.

The opening of the Zorinsky Aquatic Center and Morton Pool will be delayed due to equipment issues. Revised opening dates for these facilities will be announced at a later date.

The Mayor’s Office will continue to update media representatives on any future changes in events due to rising water levels on the Missouri River.

The Santa Lucia Festival , scheduled for Thursday through Monday, June 9-13, will now be held in the parking lots west of Rick’s Boatyard Café and Riverfront Drive.
