Mayor Suttle’s Virtual Budget Forums A Success – Second Set of Topics on EngageOmaha.com Now Available

June 7, 2011

June 7, 2011 – Omaha Mayor Jim Suttle has completed his gathering of public input on the City’s budget. This year’s collection of ideas from Omaha residents was conducted via a virtual town hall website called Engageomaha.com. The goal was to expand the level of participation to more people living in Omaha and allow for greater diversity and transparency in collecting public opinion on the city’s budget.

Since EngageOmaha.com was launched six weeks ago, more than 12,000 people visited the site. Over 700 individuals signed-up and participated in the pre-budget issue public discussion. This is almost 7 times more than last year’s pre-budget public forums. “New questions about city services are now open for user idea generation,” said David Arnold, Deputy Communication Director. “As additional questions are posted on EngageOmaha.com, we believe the amount of citizen participation will continue to grow.” Many of the new questions were chosen by City Department Directors in order to continue discussion on specific topics submitted by users during the first term of questions.

MindMixer – the City of Omaha’s private partner for EngageOmaha.com – will deliver all submitted data on the budget to the Mayor’s Office. The City’s formal response will be posted on EngageOmaha.com and e-mailed to all users on June 22nd.

EngageOmaha.com is part of the Suttle Administration’s embracement of technology as a way to improve city services. This “Government 2.0” project is the first of a series of policy changes which will strengthen the connection between Omahans and city officials. Just last week, Mayor Suttle revealed his online Public Calendar, a project to increase transparency at City Hall. The calendar is updated each Monday with the previous week’s events and can be found on the Mayor’s website: http://www.cityofomaha.org/mayor/calendar/.

The City of Omaha partnered with Omaha technology company Mindmixer to produce EngageOmaha.com. MindMixer is an idea generation and concept prioritization solution for city leaders, elected officials, stakeholder groups, and professional organizations. MindMixer was created as an answer to the long-standing challenge of integrating stakeholder ideas into the decision-making process.

Event Changes Due to High Water Levels

June 3, 2011

June 2, 2011 — Hummel Park Day Camp and other activities at this park have been canceled for the 2011 Summer Season. This is due to excessive rain as well as the high river levels expected to last through the summer. This is the first time the park has been forced to cancel its Day Camp that has been in existence for over 60 years. “Our most important purpose is to ensure the safety of campers and staff,” said Melinda Pearson. “We feel this step is necessary based on the current and projected flooding conditions in the area. Full refunds of fees will be processed and mailed within the next few weeks. Next summer the day camp program will resume in new facilities at Hummel Park.”

Private donors have come to the rescue for Omaha kids by funding expansions to the Rec’s Kids Clubhouse Program with an additional site. The new Rec’s Kids Clubhouse site will be at the Walnut Grove Pavilion on 15050 Q Street. There is still plenty of time to sign up for this summer youth program for children ages 6-15, with Rec’s Kids Clubhouse. This program is designed to facilitate recreation opportunities for Omaha’s youth. The summer and after-school program encourages active, healthy, lifestyles while promoting social, emotional, and cognitive growth through play. Call 444-4FUN to request additional information.

The opening of the Zorinsky Aquatic Center and Morton Pool will be delayed due to equipment issues. Revised opening dates for these facilities will be announced at a later date.

The Mayor’s Office will continue to update media representatives on any future changes in events due to rising water levels on the Missouri River.

Taste of Omaha , scheduled for Friday through Sunday, June 3-4-5, will take place at the Heartland of America Park (as usual) and the following adjacent streets; 8th Street from Farnam Street to Riverfront Drive, Douglas Street from 8th to 10th Streets and Farnam Street from 8th to 10th Streets as well as the boardwalk by Rick’s Boatyard Café.

The Santa Lucia Festival , scheduled for Thursday through Monday, June 9-13, will now be held in the parking lots west of Rick’s Boatyard Café and Riverfront Drive.

Mayor Suttle Launches EngageOmaha.com

April 20, 2011

April 20, 2011 – Mayor Suttle is proud to announce the launch of EngageOmaha.com, one of the nation’s first city-wide, virtual town hall websites. The Suttle Administration partnered with Omaha small-business Mindmixer to offer an innovative way for residents of Omaha to provide input on important community issues.

In order to reach out to as many Omaha residents as possible, the Suttle Administration is expanding the way it gathers input on important issues impacting our city. EngageOmaha.com is a way for city officials to hear from a larger, more diverse, cross section of citizens who may not be able to attend traditional public forums. Members of the Omaha community will be able to provide input from home, work, or wherever there is access to an internet connection. All Omahans will now have an opportunity to weigh in on issues up for consideration within the various city departments.

EngageOmaha.com is part of the Suttle Administration’s embracement of technology as a way to improve city services. This “Government 2.0” project is the first of a series of policy changes which will strengthen the connection between Omahans and city officials. “Omaha residents can now engage their government twenty-four hours a day, wherever there is access to the internet,” said Mayor Suttle. “I’m proud to offer this innovative tool and encourage all Omahans of Omaha to connect with their city government.”

City of Omaha Receives Grant to Stop Violence in the Omaha Metro

April 15, 2011

April 14, 2011 – As of today, the City of Omaha has 32 grant funded contracts with community-based organizations for more than $1,000,000 to provide educational programs, employment training, leadership development, behavioral skill development, and quality afterschool time to at-risk youth in our community, as a means to prevent participation in gang and violent crime.

The City of Omaha, Douglas County Attorney’s Office, the Urban League of Nebraska, and nine other community based organizations received grant awards from the State of Nebraska Office of Violence Prevention this week to support local violence prevention and intervention programs. The three separate grant awards total $228,800 that is being applied toward community-based violence prevention and intervention programs in the Omaha community.

The City of Omaha will work with Urban League of Nebraska, the Douglas County Attorney’s Office, and nine other nonprofits to support programs to alleviate crime and violent behavior, from afterschool activities to programs that teach youth offenders to develop empathy for victims and give the offenders a chance to make amends.

While the City, Urban League of Nebraska and the Douglas County Attorney’s Office applied for these grants last year, the money comes at a time when a run of local shootings have killed two and injured 10.

“Our community has been shaken by the recent shootings in our city,” Mayor Suttle said. “But we are working day and night to bring an end to violence in Omaha. The grant our city and partner organizations have received will help connect those citizens most at-risk of conflict with the help they need to improve their lives and reject the violence that devastates our community.”

The State of Nebraska Office of Violence Prevention grant supports increased collaboration between the City of Omaha and nonprofit groups working to end violence in the Omaha metro. The money will be used to enhance local prevention programs, which teach at-risk youth the skills they need to avoid gangs and violence, and intervention programs, which intervene in the lives of gang members, their peers and families to connect them with employment and educational opportunities to stop further violence.

To improve the communitywide response to violence, the City of Omaha has partnered with the following organizations to collaborate to implement prevention and intervention programs in the Omaha area: Building Bright Futures, Eastern Nebraska Community Action Partnership (ENCAP), Center for Holistic Development, Hope Center for Kids, Omaha Housing Authority, Women’s Center for Advancement (formerly YWCA), Impact One Community Connection (IOCC), Heartland Family Service, and Family First.
