The goal was to have an open dialogue on strengthening partnerships between neighboring communities and the city’s school districts. “We serve many of the same people and face many of the same issues on a daily basis,” said Mayor Suttle. “I thought it was important to have a discussion about building partnerships, exchanging ideas, and sharing resources so we can effectively improve the quality of life for our children and community as a whole.”

The participants in today’s meeting include: Don Groesser, Mayor of Ralston, John Mackiel, Omaha Public Schools, Keith Lutz, Millard Public Schools, Stephen Baker, Elkhorn Public Schools, Jacquie Estee, Westside Community Schools and Jerald Riibe, Ralston Public Schools. Suttle Explores All Avenues in Fighting Violent Crime

January 9, 2012

January 6, 2012 – Mayor Jim Suttle’s office submitted grant applications today for 16 distinct juvenile programs aimed at reducing gang activity, youth violence, and truancy in Omaha. Grant proposals were submitted to the Nebraska Crime Commission Juvenile Services Grant Program which offers funding for local governments and community based organizations to provide targeted prevention and intervention programs for youth that are currently involved or at-risk of becoming involved with the juvenile justice system.

The City of Omaha proposed over $1.3 million of vital youth prevention and intervention services in partnership with area non-profit organizations. If awarded, each proposed program will provide necessary funding for partner non-profit organizations to provide additional services and programs for area at-risk youth. Among the proposed programs included are; truancy prevention services that work one-on-one with students that are experiencing high absenteeism, and street-based gang outreach specialists who directly intervene with and provide employment and educational resources to gang members and families to stop violence from escalating.

These programs are in line with the Omaha Police Departments statistics showing areas of decline in youth violence correlating to the implementation of these types of programs. “Programs that keep our young people in school, at work and out of gangs are crucial to the reduction of violence in our community,” said Mayor Suttle. “We need to continue exploring every resource available to provide alternatives to violence in our community.”

Grant application results should be available this spring, and successful applications will be able to start implementing their programs in July.

Mayor Suttle Praises Dundee Merchants and Councilman Pete Festersen for Work on Streetscape Project

January 6, 2012

January 5, 2012 – Omaha Mayor Jim Suttle commended the Dundee Merchants Association and Councilman Pete Festersen today for their efforts to move forward on a $2.5 million dollar streetscape renovation project in Downtown Dundee. “I am proud of the drive and determination by Dundee businesses to continually cultivate and improve their neighborhood,” said Mayor Suttle. “This grassroots streetscape project demonstrates the effectiveness of public-private partnerships and their impact on economic development for the city as a whole.”

The Omaha Planning Board approved a request yesterday by Dundee business representatives for a new business district to expand capital improvements on Underwood Avenue between 49th and 51st as well as another block and a half along 50th street.

This fall, Dundee was named one of nation’s top 10 neighborhoods by the American Planning Association. The Dundee Merchants Association, the Dundee Business Improvement District and the City of Omaha were also awarded a challenge grant to help fund the neighborhood’s streetscape renovation project.

A year and a half ago, community members, merchants and business leaders began working with RDG Design, a local design firm, to develop a conceptual plan for the redevelopment of Dundee’s aging streetscape which revitalizes the intersections deteriorated sidewalks and trees. “The Kiewit Foundation, the Dundee business community, and Councilman Pete Festersen deserve much praise for their collaborative efforts to revitalize this cornerstone of Omaha history,” said Mayor Suttle.
