How does registration work?
All Omaha schools are invited to participate. Once the principal agrees, then the schools assign a volunteer organizer. The organizer will hold a registration between March to beginning of April. The deadline for the organizer to turn in cards to the Recreation Department is April 6th. Beginning April 18th, open registration begins at various Community Centers for anyone not registering through a school. These Community Centers are Saddlebrook Community Center, Montclair Community Center, Mockingbird Community Center, AV Sorenson Community Center, and Hummel Park Nature Center (limited hours).
What if my child’s school is not a participating school/bus pick up site?
Your child can attend Hummel if their school is not a pick up site. Please check out our website, www.cityofomaha.org/parks, to find a nearby school that will work for him or her to be picked up at. Open registration begins April 18th at various Community Centers for those not registering through a school.
My child cannot attend camp the week his school is scheduled to go, can he go another week?
Open registration begins April 18th for those not registering through their school. Your child may choose any available week to register. Please check out our website, www.cityofomaha.org/parks, to find other schools that may work for him or her to be picked up at.
How are the groups divided?
The groups are divided by grade only, not age. If two campers want to be together and are not in the same grade, they should just sit together when they get off the bus.
What if my child has a friend that they want to be in the same group with?
When campers get off the bus they should sit next to the friend they would like to be in a group with.
How much does Hummel Day Camp cost?
The week-long camp is $95 which includes transportation, food, and a whole lot of fun!
What time does camp run?
The camp is Monday-Thursday from 9:00-3:45 and Friday from 1:00-6:30pm. Bus pick up and drop off times will be before and after these times.
What ages of children are able to attend Hummel Day Camp?
Campers must have completed 1st grade through 7th grade by summer to attend camp. There are no exceptions based on birthdays.
What are the bus times for my school?
Bus times are not available until the Thursday prior to your child’s week of camp. Bus times can be found on our website at www.cityofomaha.org/parks or by calling 444-4FUN. Bus times range from 7:30-8:40am and 4:20-5:30pm depending on bus routes. The bus schedule is adjusted for Fridays.
Is there construction is going on at Camp?
No! Construction is complete and we have a beautiful new Nature Center that is currently open for our nature classes, open family times, and birthday party packages!
Are there refunds?
Refunds will be given up to two weeks before the registered week of camp. There is a $50 administrative fee on all refunds. No exceptions.
Are there scholarships available?
Reduced fees are available for any child that receives free or reduced lunch at school. The reduced fee is $50 and documentation must accompany the registration card.
What activities do kids participate in at Hummel?
Campers participate in a wide variety of activities such as archery, nature hikes, nature identification, wilderness skills, arts and crafts, camp songs, cooking over the campfire, water and mud activities, and a variety of other outdoor recreational games.
Do the campers swim?
Swimming is not part of the Hummel Day Camp program.
What is the supervision like?
Each group has 20 or fewer campers with two counselors per group. Counselors are all 18 and older.
What should my child wear?
Something old! Campers will come home dirty. Please make sure all clothing and shoes are suitable for hiking and playing outdoor games. No skirts or flip flops.
What should my child bring with him to camp?
A small backpack is allowed at camp. Your child may want to bring a jacket or poncho in case of rain. We suggest they bring a water bottle, bug spray, and sunscreen to take with them on hikes. Do not send money, ipods, cell phones, or anything of value with your child. The City of Omaha is not responsible for any lost or stolen items.
What is the menu?
Each day includes the main dish, chips, an apple or orange and a drink. Popsicles are provided for an afternoon snack and one day the campers will also make s’mores.

Wednesday: Sloppy Joes
Thursday: Pudgie Pizzas (pepperoni and cheese)
Friday: Campers bring a sack lunch (no refrigeration is available)
What if my child is a picky eater?
Your child may bring a sack lunch for any day (no refrigeration is available).
Is there refrigeration available for sack lunches?
There is no refrigeration available for sack lunches.
Is there access to water?
We have a main water station at camp that the campers have access to. We encourage every camper to bring a water bottle and keep it filled at all times in order to keep hydrated or for water fights.
What if there is severe weather?
If there is rain, camp continues as normal with most activities done under the campsite shelters. If the weather becomes severe, all campers will move into the Nature Center, which has a FEMA rated Safe Room. Each Monday morning a tornado drill is practiced so campers know what to do in case of emergency.
What if my child has medication?
The staff cannot be responsible for holding or administering medication, with the exception of an epi pen.
What if I need to pick my child up early one day?
Please call Hummel Day Camp directly, 444-4760, to let them know when you will be picking your child up. They can arrange to have your camper waiting for you at the Nature Center. You will need to sign them out and show picture identification.
What if my child gets sick or injured while at camp?
If your child gets sick or is injured and needs to leave camp, we will notify you immediately. The staff is certified in CPR and First Aid.
Is there a Friday Night Parent’s Program?
Yes. On Friday nights, parents are invited to the Parent's Program beginning at 5:40pm. Individual awards are given out after the program and the festivities conclude usually about 6:30pm. If there is severe weather the Parent's Program could be cancelled. There is no return bus transportation on Fridays so all children need to be picked up.
Are there counselors on the bus?
There is one counselor on the bus every day except Fridays.
Are there pictures taken of the campers?
Each week the Camp Director takes a variety of pictures around camp. These pictures are then put on the Shutterfly photo website. If you put your email on the registration card, you will be sent a link to your child’s week of photos. From the website you can view, save, or print the photos. If you prefer your child not be in any photos you can check “NO” on the registration card.
How do I get to Hummel Day Camp?
From the north or west: From I-680 North, take the 30th Street exit. Take a right (south) off the exit and then an immediate left at the stoplight (Dick Collins). Follow around until you hit a stop sign and turn left onto J.J. Pershing Road. Follow the winding road and take the 2nd entrance into Hummel Park, the one labeled “Hummel Park Day Camp”.
Coming from the south: Take Hwy 75 North which turns into 30th Street. Follow it all the way until the stoplight at Dick Collins Road. Take a left onto Dick Collins. Follow it around until you hit a stop sign and turn left onto J.J. Pershing Road. Follow it around and take the 2nd entrance into Hummel Park, the one labeled “Hummel Park Day Camp”.
