Birthsite of Malcolm X
3448 Pinkney Street
Designated Omaha Landmark: September 28, 1982
Among the national black leaders who emerged in the early 1960’s was Malcolm X, born Malcolm Little in Omaha in 1925. After a difficult early life that included a prison sentence, Malcolm X reformed and converted to the Islamic religion. Under his later Muslim name, El Hajj Malik El Shabazz, he led the battle for black unity, pride and self determination. Although an assassin’s bullet cut short his life in 1965, Malcolm X helped establish an awareness of black culture and power in the 1960’s.
The property at 3448 Pinkney Street, site of the Little family home at the time of Malcolm’s birth, was designated a Landmark under the City of Omaha’s Landmark Heritage Ordinance on September 28, 1982.
